Kushkak Canal Rehabilitation project completion ceremony was celebrated in Surkhrod district. This canal flows up to 10 kilometers through six villages and provides irrigation water for 388 hectares of land, benefiting 1178 farming families in Surkhrod District of Nangarhar Province. USAID implemented this project in close coordination with the Department of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, the Department of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, and the local community. The rehabilitation work included the construction of 70 meters long main wall, 882 meters of canal side walls, three regulating gates for spillways and 17 dikes in different locations.

10-kilometer-long canal rehabilitated in Nangarhar 10-kilometer-long canal reconstructed in Nangarhar and handed over to the community on June 26, 2012. Regional director for USAID’s IDEA-NEW East, Khan Mohammad Momand told PAN that rehabilitation work of the Kushkak canal was completed in 15 months. He added that work opportunity was provided for tens of locals and thousands of families get benefit from it. Momand says that the canal length is 10 kilometers; flows through six villages, two flour mills are reactivated along the canal and irrigates two thousand jeribs of farmland. According to him, the total cost of the project was 305000 USD funded by US government through USAID. Head of planning department of Directorate of Irrigation and Energy, Engineer Jan Mohammad told PAN that there was not enough water for irrigation of farmland before rehabilitation of Kushkak canal. He added that agricultural land is protected from flood threats now. According to him, through daily wage employment and sourcing sand, gravel and stone, USD 185000 was injected to the local economy. Head of Surkhrod’s CDC, Said Ahmad Fatimi criticized the government and donor organizations for implementing projects without coordinating with them, and Kushkak is one of these. He strongly rejected the claims of implementing large number of projects in the area. Another member of the CDC, Hajji Zalmai told PAN that the mentioned project benefits Balabagh, Kakrak, Karasu and Surkhab villages of the district more. He added that the project not only solved problems of irrigation but also provided electricity to around 500 households. |

With rehabilitation of a canal, 2000 jeribs of farmland became irrigated. After rehabilitation, the Kushkak Canal was handed over to the community in Surkhrod district, Nangarhar. The canal is 10 kilometers long and the total cost of it was 300,000 USD funded by USAID’s IDEA-NEW. The regional director for IDEA-NEW, Khan Mohammad Momand said that the canal flows through six villages of the district and benefits hundreds of families. According to him, the canal took 15 months to be rehabilitated and the rehabilitation work included the construction of 70 meters long main wall, 882 meters of canal side walls, three regulating gates for spillways and 17 dikes in different locations. According to Khan Mohammad, 2000 jeribs of farmland came under irrigation through reconstruction of the canal that will help increase products. Also, the locals of the area are pleased with rehabilitation of the canal and say that the canal not only provides irrigation water for hundreds of jeribs of farmland but also operates two micro hydropower plants and two flour mills. According to the locals of the area, they expect that the canal will solve their agricultural problems and strengthen the economy as well. A resident of the Surkhrod district, Hajji Zalmi told Roz Afghan News that the canal has brought great change in the lives of people. He says that the water would flow uselessly and the people of the area didn’t take any advantage of it but now the canal provides water for thousands of jeribs of farmland. He says that the rehabilitation of the canal will help them boost their agricultural products, will have electricity and will be protected from flood threats. It’s worth mentioning that other similar canals, which provide irrigation water for hundreds of jeribs of farmland, have been rehabilitated in a number of Nangarhar districts through IDEA-NEW.
