IDEA-NEW provides 60,000 glass bottles and other packaging materials worth US $6,000 to Khalil Rehan Tomato Paste and Fruit Jam Factory, established with US Government support in Jalalabad city, Nangarhar Province. Established in late 2007, the factory provides job opportunities for 20 people (10 males and 10 females) on a permanent basis. The factory produces tomato paste, pickles, and different varieties of fruit jams from locally produced, high quality vegetables and fruits.
IDEA-NEW’s extended support to Khalil Rehan Tomato Paste and Jam Factory aims to expand the factory’s operations and help to improve both the quality of the product and its packaging while also increasing its production capacity to increase its market share in local and provincial markets.
In addition to IDEA-NEW’s technical and marketing support, it has linked the factory to two pulp centers that supply the tomato and fruit pulp as raw material for its products.
IDEA-NEW has established two pulping centers, one in Markikhil in Shirzad District which is renowned for producing quality tomatoes and another in Surkhrud District primarily for fruit pulp production. These two pulping centers each have a 10 metric ton daily production capacity. They aim to support the local agriculture markets by purchasing locally produced vegetables and fruits, which are turned into pulp and then packaged at the Khalil Rehan Tomato Paste and Fruit Jam Factory.
IDEA-NEW has been working to provide market opportunities for local products produced in the eastern region. The project provides technical support to local investors who are interested in funding both agriculture and non-agriculture activities to create job opportunities, strengthen the local economy, and help contribute to the overall stability of the country.
