Talc miners and traders from across Nangarhar province found the industry’s first ever business Association at a ceremony held in Jalalabad on January 12, 2010. During the event, more than 250 members elected Muhammad Rahim Karimzai as their Director.
USAID’s IDEA-NEW and the Nangarhar PRT’s Agricultural Development Team are supporting a Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock initiative aimed at producing more than 6,000 tons of certified wheat seed for farmers in Nangarhar province.
IDEA-NEW launched a weeklong training on seedling production for fruit tree nurseries across the eastern region. A total of 240 private nursery operators from Nangarhar, Kunar and Laghman were trained on modern techniques in seedling production.
With support from USAID’s IDEA-NEW, 150 farmer families are producing 30 tons of improved varieties of mung bean seed, Maash 2008 (NM - 94), and Mai 2008 (NM – 92), on 15 hectares of land in 21 districts across eastern Afghanistan.
